Northern Arizona is home to hundreds of abandoned uranium mines, many located on the Navajo Nation. Exposure to uranium can occur through inhalation of dust or injection of the water soluble uranyl cation (UO2)2+. Long term exposure can lead to chronic health problems including kidney damage and reproductive cancers. Development of materials that selectively detect and sequester uranyl is a focus of our group.

Our ultimate aim is to develop a simple and inexpensive material that sequesters uranium and thorium ions from drinking water.
